IntelliReefs Ocean Floor Restoration

Updated: Aug 27, 2022

IntelliReefs: Coral Restoration Project 112; officially endorsed by the United Nations/UNESCO has updated monitoring significance in additional species growth, which has created a "Bio Oasis" in the Caribbean where they were deployed in 2018. The Project is a part of the CORAL REEF SENTINALS A Mars Shot for Blue Planetary Health

Our Ocean Decade action, “Coral Reef Restoration Engaging Local Stakeholders Using Novel Biomimicking IntelliReefs” seeks to deploy hundreds of additional

IntelliReefs and further analyze the benefits and applications of IntelliReefs for fish, corals, kelp, seaweed, boosting local economies as it builds upon the foundation laid by our two current projects in Sint Maarten and Canada.

Since January 2022, our team has been working tirelessly to manage our endorsement, and engage with the Ocean Decade as completely as possible. We started by building a comprehensive inventory of every endorsed action with the goal of identifying which actions aligned closely with ours. Our goal was to create a roadmap to inform our engagement efforts that we could easily navigate and update over time. We developed an information sheet to distribute to other ocean decade actions and then we got to work. Over the spring of 2022, we reached out to fifteen organizations whose goals shared a nexus with ours. We built four new relationships during that time and there is still much work left to be done! The Ocean Decade will continue to endorse new actions throughout the 2020’s, which means we will continue to have opportunities to meet with new organizations that are as motivated to affect change as we are.

We firmly agree that we cannot achieve meaningful ocean impact unless we all participate to the greatest of our ability. In that spirit, creating an inventory of the endorsed actions and facilitating connections is just a portion of what we’re doing to engage with the Ocean Decade. We are also attending Decade-hosted webinars, trainings, event launches, and networking opportunities to be sure that we are soaking up every last drop that the Decade offers.

Much of the Ocean Decade’s spring events have been geared toward a culminating event: the 2022 Ocean Decade Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. While we are not attending the conference within the Blue Zone, we will be in Lisbon attending a variety of side events hosted by a myriad of organizations, including some of the organizations we’ve met this spring. We are very excited to meet with fellow ocean advocates and innovators to discuss the ways that we’re all working toward the ocean we want.

We will continue to prioritize moving our endorsed action forward over the course of the Ocean Decade. We look forward to continuing to be a part of the vast, interdisciplinary and multi-national team of ocean innovators working to achieve the science we need for the ocean we want. Over 450 actions have been endorsed to date and we all share one goal: to unlock innovative science solutions for the ocean we want. The Ocean Decade provides a platform for thousands of organizations across the globe to organize and participate in events, share information, and build networks.
